Why Nessum Will Become the Global BPL Standard in 2027

Global reach, strong industry partners, and a new generation of smart grid and smart metering

2026 has demonstrated just how rapidly Nessum is gaining international significance. Millions of Nessum devices shipped, new applications beyond smart metering, and a growing international ecosystem make it clear: broadband powerline is evolving from a technology for individual markets into a globally deployable communication solution.

With companies such as Panasonic, GE Vernova, Daikin, and PPC, Nessum is backed by an international alliance that is continuously advancing the technology and applying it to ever-new applications. 2027 is likely to further accelerate this trend.

That’s because, with the current generation of technology, Nessum combines precisely the characteristics that modern energy grids require: range, high data rates, flexibility, and a communications infrastructure that can be scaled across the existing power grid.

Nessum Broadband Powerline is ready for the next phase of the smart grid

With Nessum, PPC is bringing the latestBPL technology to the smart meter and smart grid rollout. It’s no longer just about reliably transmitting meter readings from the basement, because in the future, the communications infrastructure must support a wide variety of applications—from smart metering systems to grid monitoring and control.

Long Range

Long-range frequency bands enable stable communication over several hundred meters within the low-voltage grid.

High Data Rates

High-speed frequency bands provide additional bandwidth for growing data volumes and new applications.

Flexible During Operation

Depending on the grid situation, it is possible to switch between different frequency plans. This allows communication to be adapted to the requirements of the respective grid without having to rebuild the infrastructure.

From Smart Metering to the Smart Grid

This is precisely where the significance of the current Nessum generation lies: the technology creates a common communication foundation for various applications within the energy grid.

The infrastructure being built today for the smart meter rollout can also be used in the future for grid monitoring, control, and other smart grid applications. As a result, BPL is becoming a long-term component of the digital grid infrastructure.

A Growing Global Standard

Technological development is only part of the story.

Alongside the Nessum Alliance, an international ecosystem of technology companies, manufacturers, and users is growing. Major companies such as Panasonic, GE Vernova, and Daikin demonstrate that Nessum is no longer limited to individual applications or markets. More than six million modules featuring Nessum technology that have already been shipped underscore this trend.

Nessum Europe Day: Discussing the Next Stage of Development Together

How will Nessum continue to evolve? What new applications are emerging? And what role can BPL play in European energy grids in the future?

At Nessum Europe Day on November 9, 2026, in Vienna, companies from the international Nessum ecosystem will provide insights into current developments, applications, and the next steps for the technology.

Participants include Panasonic, GE Vernova, and PPC, among others.
