What is broadband powerline?

Broadband powerline technology transforms the electrical grid into an effective and secure communication platform for digital applications in the distribution network. All data is transmitted in real time, via IP, securely encrypted, and at broadband speeds over the grid.

Communication Technology for the Smart Metering System

As part of the smart meter rollout, meter operators face the challenge of integrating mandatory installations as quickly as possible while also ensuring connectivity to the installed SMGWs. In both cases, broadband powerline offers a secure, reliable, and cost-effective communication solution, even in challenging environments with limited wireless coverage.

Broadband Powerline shortens installation time, increases the installation completion rate, and improves rollout planning for the meter operator.

An overview of the benefits of our broadband powerline system:

Standardized

Our BPL system uses the IEEE 1901 Access Standard.

Data Encryption

Data is protected at all times through “end-to-end encryption.”

Availability

Optimal connection quality thanks to data transmission via the power grid itself.

Reliable

Reliable real-time data transmission. Wide frequency band with maximum resistance to interference.

Open Architecture

Use of broadband powerline for additional applications in the smart grid, such as big data, grid control, or load control.

Plug & Play

Quick installation while the system is powered on. Easy to install with standard tools, no on-site configuration required.

Remote Monitoring

Detailed remote monitoring and analysis of each individual broadband powerline connection via our network management system using SNMP over TLS/DTLS.

Dynamic

Automatic adaptation to the network. Dynamic routing, smart repeating, and meshed-net technology.

Nessum: Versatile, interoperable, and the most powerful standard for BPL

The globally adopted BPL standard IEEE 1901-2020 (Nessum) provides interoperable and high-performance connectivity for numerous devices, such as the smart meter gateway (SMGW). It supports secure, high-performance data communication over the power grid.

The standard is being developed by the relevant working group within the IEEE, while the Nessum Alliance brings together technology providers from around the world, including Panasonic, Socionext, MegaChips, GE Vernova, Teldat, Daikin, Swistec, Ecolinqx, Helvetia—and many more.

Broadband Powerline Communication for Low-Voltage Systems

The basic structure of the low-voltage broadband powerline network consists of a backbone connection via a BPL modem, as well as BPL repeaters in the street distribution boxes and local stations. Modems with integrated meters are installed in households. The network management system is used for network monitoring and control.
