Forschungsprojekt Modellstadt Mannheim

Modellstadt Mannheim (moma) ist ein Forschungsprojekt im Rahmen des E-Energy Förderprogramms der Bundesregierung. In drei Phasen testen die neun Konsortialpartner in Mannheim und Dresden das Stromnetz der Zukunft schon heute und arbeiten daran, das konventionelle Stromnetz in ein Smart Grid zu verwandeln.

Zentrale Fragestellungen sind:

Wie können erneuerbare Energien optimal integriert werden?
Wie kann die Stadt als Energiespeicher fungieren?

Partner des Forschungsprojektes Modellstadt Mannheim sind neben PPC auch MVV Energie AG, IBMu.a.

Ziel bei moma ist zu zeigen, dass die intelligenten Stromnetze (Smart Grids) mit der entsprechenden Technologie eine hohe Netzstabilität und Versorgungssicherheit liefern können. Und das auch, wenn viele dezentrale und zentrale Erzeuger angeschlossen sind. Kurze Transportwege helfen, die Netzverluste zu minimieren.

Intensive Zusammenarbeit

Auch nach der Ausgründung aus der MVV Enerige AG genießt PPC eine stabile Partnerschaft zum Energieversorger. Durch diese Zusammenarbeit haben wir im Projekt moma die einzigartige Möglichkeit erhalten, das komplette Stromnetz einer Großstadt mit über 300.000 Einwohnern für unsere Technologietests zu nutzen und so unsere Produkte unter natürlichen Bedingungen zu testen und zu optimieren. Im moma-Projekt haben wir über 125.000 Haushalte an das größte Breitband-Powerline-Netz in Europa angeschlossen.

Unsere Projekte mit der MVV Energie AG betreffen vorwiegend die Bereiche Smart Metering und Smart Grids. Hierunter fällt nicht nur die Sparte Strom, sondern auch Wärme, Gas und Wasser. PPC liefert Kommunikationssystem

Für das bisher sehr erfolgreiche Forschungsprojekt liefert PPC das Kommunikationssystem: Mit BPL wird das Stromnetz im gesamten Stadtgebiet zu einer IP-basieren Echtzeit-Kommunikationsplattform, die alle Haushalte, dezentralen Erzeuger und Messgeräte miteinander verbindet. So weiß der Energieversorger jederzeit, wie viel Strom aus regenerativen Energiequellen ins Netz eingespeist wird und wie viel Energiebedarf besteht. Durch eine intelligente Verbrauchssteuerung wird das Stromnetz dann immer in Balance gehalten.

Insgesamt 3.000 Haushalte werden mit Anwendungen zur intelligenten Bedienung von Haushaltsgeräten ausgestattet und an das „Smart Grid“ angeschlossen. Die Daten werden verschlüsselt über das Stromnetz transportiert und zum einen über ein passwortgeschütztes Webportal dem Endkunden und zum anderen dem Energieversorger MVV Energie zur Verfügung gestellt. Hierbei wurde gezeigt, dass das BPL-System größere Datenmengen für verschiedene Zwecke verarbeiten kann. So werden die Informationen jederzeit für den Kunden bereitgestellt und gleichzeitig kann der Energieversorger häufige Abrechnungen (z.B. monatlich) erstellen.

Variable Stromtarife

Dynamische und variable Kundentarife spielen bei moma eine zentrale Rolle. Diese richten sich nach der Verfügbarkeit von Erneuerbaren Energien und sollen den Kunden motivieren, seinen Verbrauch auf die Zeiten zu verlegen, zu denen viel Strom aus Sonne, Wind etc. zur Verfügung stehen.

In der Praxis hat sich gezeigt, dass Verbraucher die Kostenvorteile erkennen und gerne nutzen. Durchschnittlich reagieren Haushalte auf eine 100%ige Preisänderung mit einer 11%igen Verbrauchsreaktion. Engagierte Haushalte zu bestimmten Zeiten mit einer 35%igen Verbrauchsreaktion.

Research Project in Mannheim

Smart City Mannheim (moma) is one of several research projects set up under the German government funded programme ‘E-Energy’. The three phase project sees the nine consortium partners putting the power grid of the future to the test in Mannheim and Dresden. The key objectives of the project are to demonstrate how renewable energy can be optimally integrated into the grid as well as how the city can function as an energy store. In addition to PPC other partners in the project include MVV Energie AG and IBM.

Broadband Powerline Solution

The project, to date, has been highly successful with PPC’s Broadband Powerline (BPL) solution providing the communications infrastructure. Using BPL, the power grid is turned into an IP-based, real-time communications platform which connects all households, decentralised generators and measuring devices. A total of 3,000 households will be equipped with devices which will intelligently control household appliances and connect them to the smart grid. The encrypted data will be transported to the customer’s password protected web portal as well as to the utility MVV Energie. It demonstrates the BPL system’s capability to process large volumes of data for various purposes. The information is available to the customer at all times and at the same time the utility is able to produce invoices more regularly (e.g. monthly).

Variable tariffs

Our field tests showed that customers react to price signals. Customers accepted variable tariffs and recognised their cost advantages. Depending on whether the price was high or low, energy consumption was influenced substantially. To be able to show how the customers react, we tested price-elasticity (the flexible relationship between price change and behaviour changes).

Customers had an average price-elasticity of between ten and eighteen percent, up to a maximum of 35% in the evenings.

Project results

In moma we worked to transition a conventional power grid to a smart grid. The goal was to show that smart grids can ensure security of energy supply (including renewables) and grid stability with ICTtechnology.

Key findings:

Short transport distances help to minimize grid losses.
A powerful communication infrastructure – broadband powerline enables realtime data transmission over the power grid itself.
Real time information about consumption and production allows intelligent network control for utilities and distribution network operators.
The power grid can be balanced through demand side management.
