As part of the project, 300 smart meter gateways (SMGWs), including the necessary BPL modems, will be installed in a wide variety of locations, ranging from street distribution boxes to transformer stations. The project was divided into two pilot projects, each addressing the specific requirements of urban and rural environments, respectively.

” consumers became mandatory under Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG) as of January 1, 2024, it was clear that grid operators and metering point operators would need an open, interoperable platform to tackle the digital control rollout in a cost-effective and efficient manner. With the successful certification of our CLS Adapter Control system in accordance with BSZ and TR-03109-5 by the BSI, these prerequisites have now been met. This provides legal and planning certainty. Nothing now stands in the way of the large-scale digital control rollout.

Octopus Energy, the climate-neutral energy provider from the United Kingdom, and PPC, the leading provider of smart meter gateways, have agreed to a strategic partnership for the German market. The goal: climate neutrality and customer benefits through the digital harnessing of decentralized flexibility via the rollout of intelligent metering systems (iMSys). The partnership is already gaining momentum, as the energy provider has already announced the installation of its 1,000th PPC SMGW.
In early November, the BSI, in collaboration with the “Secure Logistics Chain” project group of the VDE’s Network Technology/Network Operations Forum (FNN), developed and published a catalog of requirements for the “MSB supply chain.” In order for an MSB to be able to handle the delivery of SMGWs from the point of goods receipt on its own responsibility, this delivery option must be specified in the SMGW manufacturer’s certification documentation.
By completing these certifications, PPC is establishing legal and planning certainty in the CLS environment. The requirements for certifying CLS gateways were formalized by the BSI in December 2023, thereby establishing standards for interoperability and cybersecurity for all market participants. As a component of critical infrastructure, this dual certification not only strengthens confidence in security for end customers and network operators but also drives standardization at the interface between the network and the end customer.
PPC is celebrating the successful completion of the BSZ process. This marks the completion of an important milestone on the path to BSI-TR03109-5 certification for PPC CLS products.
