Grid observability

Avoiding grid congestion and managing flexibility—these are the key challenges facing grid operators as they work to ensure an efficient energy transition and security of supply. The increasing electrification of the transportation and heating sectors is also bringing about significant changes on the demand side.

The traditional, passive consumer is thus evolving into an active grid user. As a result, load-related bottlenecks may occur in distribution grids in the future. By making intelligent use of flexibility, these very bottlenecks can be avoided. Knowledge of the grid’s status becomes the central foundation for these measures.

The result: To ensure that the energy system transition is compatible with the grid, lawmakers are adjusting the regulatory framework in consultation with the energy sector. First and foremost: the revision of Section 14a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG).

Managing the Rise of Electric Mobility and the Expansion of Solar Power

To ensure the targeted use of grid flexibility, grid observability is essential. Real-time status data enables both the management of PV feed-in and the targeted regulation of loads such as e-mobility. Only sufficiently accurate grid monitoring allows for efficient and targeted control interventions.

A prerequisite for integrating flexible loads into the energy system is the availability of secure and high-performance telecommunications networks for data transmission—such as broadband powerline or 450 MHz networks.
