Wieso ein SMGW 2.0?
„Neuer, höher, weiter“ könnte, wie in vielen Produktentwicklungszyklen, natürlich der Einpeitscher sein. Für die Entwicklung unserer zweiten Generation Smart Meter Gateways sind jedoch auch andere Faktoren entscheidende Antreiber.
Mehr Power für neue Anwendungsfälle
Für die erfolgreiche Umsetzung der Energie-, Verkehrs- und Wärmewende ist das Smart Meter Gateway der essentielle, cyber-sichere Digitalisierungsbaustein und Plattform für die Interaktion mit Endkunden. In den nächsten Jahren werden dazu im Ökosystem der intelligenten Messsysteme zahlreiche neue Anwendungsfälle umgesetzt. Das SMGW 2.0 ist hierfür mit der hochperformanten Hardware-Basis die ideale Voraussetzung, um Chancen und Mehrwerte zu heben sowie neue Anwendungen u.a. im Bereich steuerbarer Lasten nach §14a EnWG und neue Dienstleistungen zu realisieren. Die aktuelle Novelle des Mess- und Eichgesetzes und der Mess- und Eichverordnung unterstreichen die Relevanz einer leistungsstarken und langfristig nutzbaren Hardware als Plattform für neue Anwendungsfälle: Aufgrund der unbefristeten Eichfrist lohnt es sich schon heute die Weichen für die Anwendungen von Morgen und auch Übermorgen zu stellen. Unmittelbar profitieren MSBs im Rollout von der erhöhten Performanz, die mehrere Minuten Arbeitszeit je Einbaufall einspart sowie die Voraussetzung dafür bietet, dass noch mehr Zähler (1:n) interoperabel und spartenübergreifend an ein SMGW angeschlossen werden können.
Neue Bauteile, bessere Verfügbarkeit
Die Anspannungen in den weltweiten Lieferketten waren besonders im Jahr 2022 eine allgegenwärtige Herausforderung und auch bei der Beschaffung von Bauteilen für die SMGW-Fertigung präsent. Mit der gezielten Verwendung neuester und breit verfügbarer Komponenten ist PPC mit der zweiten Gateway Generation optimal aufgestellt, da die neuen Bauteile nicht nur leistungsfähiger, sondern auf dem Weltmarkt auch deutlich verfügbarer sind. Darüber hinaus hat PPC im SMGW 2.0 für über 95 % aller Bauteile bereits eine Second Source eingeplant, um so etwaige Engpasssituationen bei einem Lieferanten zu begegnen.
Stabile Preise in stürmischen Zeiten
Mit dem Druck auf die Lieferkette werden auch Preise instabiler, unklare Vorhersagen erschweren die langfristigen Planungen, die für einen erfolgreichen SMGW-Rollout von großer Bedeutung sind. Mit dem Layout der zweiten SMGW-Generation zieht auch hier mehr Unabhängigkeit ein. Dies stabilisiert die Preis- und Planungspolitik für uns und unsere Partner.

Neue Plattform, bewährte Software
Als hochsicheres Kommunikationsgateway besteht das SMGW nicht nur aus Chips und Hardware, sondern ebenso aus einer ausgereiften, zertifizierten und im hunderttausendfachen Feldeinsatz gehärteten Firmware. Die bewährte Firmware des SMGW 2.0 bietet bereits von Anfang an alle Funktionen an, die auch auf dem SMGW 1 zur Verfügung stehen.
Die Entwicklung der SMGW 2.0 Firmware erfolgt zukünftig nicht separiert, sondern gemeinsam mit der SMGW 1 Firmware. Bewährte Funktionen sind damit unmittelbar auf beiden Generationen verfügbar und gleichzeitig kann in der Perspektive eine erweiterter Funktionsumfang auf der hochperformanten SMGW 2.0 Hardware Basis realisiert werden.
Softwareupdates sind wie gewohnt remote durch den GWA möglich und können absehbar durch die Novelle des Eichrechts ohne separates Genehmigungsverfahren auf Länderebene ausgerollt werden.
Kontinuität – Die Generation SMGW1 hat noch nicht ausgedient

2022 was a particularly active and exciting year for the smart metering industry. PPC will meet the numerous challenges and developments of the coming year with the second generation of our Smart Meter Gateway, which further strengthens our portfolio of technology and applications.

„Newer, higher, further“ could of course be the watchwords, as in many product development cycles, but for the development of our second generation Smart Meter Gateways, other factors are the key drivers.
New components, better availability
Disruptions in global supply chains have been an ever-present challenge, especially over the past 24 months, and SMGW manufacturing has been no exception. PPC is diversifying into new peripheral components, integration modules and processors for the second gateway generation. This means that delivery times that had stretched to as long as 50 weeks can be halved in some cases, depending on the chip models.
Stable prices in uncertain times
As pressure on the supply chain increased, prices also became more unstable, with unclear forecasts complicating the long-term planning that is critical to a successful SMGW rollout. With the second generation of SMGW, we gain more independence, which will stabilise pricing and planning policies for us, and our partners.
More power for upcoming challenges
A new world of energy is coming, with increasing demands on the smart metering system and the SMGW. The development of new ideas and use cases is livelier than ever. New components, proven software
As a highly secure communication module, the SMGW relies not only on chips and hardware, but equally its powerful application firmware. This remains essentially identical in the second generation, but further developments will naturally take place within this framework. The certification of the firmware for the new gateway is already in its final stages.
PPC will be able to rely on two firmware packages (consisting of the operating system and application firmware) to guarantee both gateway generations the same levels of support.
The previous generation is far from being obsolete
The two firmware packages already make clear that we continue to support generation 1 of our SMGWs, which are ready for your use cases and can be ordered now.
