The blank spots on the map

At the start of the powerline rollout, your own network area is like an unexplored map full of blank spots. Previous PLC systems had to cope with and combine different extreme requirements at this point – usually with little success. Narrowband systems with a bandwidth of a few kHz were well suited to covering the distance from the meter cabinet in the basement to the local network station – however, the data transfer rate is very low, making modern TLS encryption impossible.

The opposite approach, moving to ‘gigabit PLC’, seems interesting at first glance, but quickly presents network operators in the field with problems. This is because the transmission of such large amounts of data requires an enormous frequency range, often up to 50 MHz, on shielded cables, sometimes up to 100 MHz. The difficulty here? Higher frequency ranges are the first to be attenuated in the practical environment of the low-pass filter ‘cable’ – and this often means that no connection between two cable distributors is possible in the end. Simply not enough subcarriers reach the desired recipient.

A successful, fast and cost-efficient BPL expansion must be able to meet both challenges – bridging even greater distances in the connection as quickly as possible while still enabling data rates in the Mbit/s range for modern encryption.

PPC’s BPL Generation 6 (Nessum): Band plans as flexible as the rollout requires

This is precisely where Nessum technology comes into its own – taking broadband powerline networks (BPL) to a whole new level of flexibility.

The decisive advantage: network operators no longer have to commit to a specific frequency range at the start of the project. Instead, Nessum enables dynamic switching between long-range and high-speed band plans – depending on the phase of network construction. Switching is conveniently carried out from the PPC Network Management System (NMS), without the need for new trips or manual follow-up.

For network operators, this means no risk from early commitments, less effort in rollout and maximum future security. With PPC’s 6th generation BPL devices, a robust network can be established initially, with the focus on fast connectivity. Once the BPL infrastructure is in place, you can switch to high data rates at the touch of a button – because every built-in BPL-SMGW also functions as a fully automatic repeater.

Nessum thus always guarantees exactly the flexibility that modern energy networks need. Whether today or in the future.
