Control systems are finally becoming smart and digital: PPC has certified its CLS Adapter control system as the first interoperable digital control system in accordance with TR-5 and BSZ

When the control of “
” consumers became mandatory under Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG) as of January 1, 2024, it was clear that grid operators and metering point operators would need an open, interoperable platform to tackle the digital control rollout in a cost-effective and efficient manner. With the successful certification of our CLS Adapter Control system in accordance with BSZ and TR-03109-5 by the BSI, these prerequisites have now been met. This provides legal and planning certainty. Nothing now stands in the way of the large-scale digital control rollout.

Double Victory: PPC Is the First to Certify a CLS Product According to BSZ and TR-5

By completing these certifications, PPC is establishing legal and planning certainty in the CLS environment. The requirements for certifying CLS gateways were formalized by the BSI in December 2023, thereby establishing standards for interoperability and cybersecurity for all market participants. As a component of critical infrastructure, this dual certification not only strengthens confidence in security for end customers and network operators but also drives standardization at the interface between the network and the end customer.

BOSCH Home Comfort, Robotron, and PPC Are Digitizing Heat Pump Control

Together, the Bosch Home Comfort Group, Robotron, and PPC are taking another major step forward in the energy-efficient deployment of heat pumps. Through this collaboration, the partners are demonstrating the digital control of a heat pump via the EEBUS protocol using the PPC CLS gateway. This paves the way for the implementation of Section 14a.

eSystems and PPC Implement a §14a Comprehensive Solution Ready for Mass Production

Since January 1, 2024, German distribution system operators have been required to reduce the power consumption of controllable consumer devices (SteuVE) to as low as 4.2 kW when necessary to support the grid. Transmitting the continuously variable dimming commands required for this has so far posed a challenge for the energy industry.

Successful Certifications of the New Production Facility Provide Capacity for Scaling Up the Smart Meter Rollout

We are pleased that the certification process for our new production lines in Landau has been formally completed with the presentation of the certificate. This means that the new facility has been approved by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for the production of certified smart meter gateways (SMGW). With the capacity expansion at the new facility to over 1 million SMGWs per year, we are ensuring that our customers have access to the quantities they need as the rollout of smart metering systems scales up. The way is now clear for a smooth scaling up of your rollout in line with the ongoing rollout targets for 2024 and the coming years.

PPC and Zählerhelden Set New Standards with the Rollout of Thousands of CLS Devices

The rollout of CLS devices is also picking up speed. SMGW market leader PPC and meter operator Zählerhelden from Dornstadt plan to install several thousand CLS gateways starting in April of this year. In addition to implementing Section 14a of the Energy Economy Act (EnWG) for end users, the joint solution focuses on other applications for market- and grid-oriented control.

Bosch Home Comfort Group, Prolan, PPC, and Robotron are implementing market- and grid-friendly control systems in existing heat pump installations

The Bosch Home Comfort Group, Prolan, Robotron, and PPC are taking a joint step forward in the energy-sector development of heat pumps. This collaboration demonstrates that today’s infrastructure—comprising heat pumps, control boxes, and iMSys—is already equipped to meet the grid-oriented requirements of Section 14a, and that market-oriented control and time-varying applications can be implemented via the SG-Ready standard.
