Control systems are finally becoming smart and digital: PPC has certified its CLS Adapter control system as the first interoperable digital control system in accordance with TR-5 and BSZ

Mannheim, February 12, 2025: PPC has certified the CLS adapter control system in accordance with BSZ and TR-03109-5. This paves the way for the rollout of the digital control system.

When the control of consumers became mandatory under Section 14a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG) as of January 1, 2024, it was clear that grid operators and metering point operators would need an open, interoperable platform to tackle the digital control rollout in a cost-effective and efficient manner. With the successful certification of our CLS Control Adapter in accordance with BSZ and TR-03109-5 by the BSI, these prerequisites have now been met. This provides legal and planning certainty. Nothing now stands in the way of the large-scale digital control rollout.

Previously, in December 2023, the BSI had already approved the requirement for CLS device certification in order to establish a foundation for verified interoperability and cybersecurity for all market participants. Following the successful certification of the PPC CLS Adapter Submetering in accordance with TR-5 specifications in October 2024, the CLS Adapter Control is now the second major component in PPC’s CLS portfolio. By completing certification according to BSZ and TR-03109-5 within four months, PPC also confirms the feasibility of this requirement for components connected to SMGWs. This successful certification not only strengthens confidence in the security of the infrastructure for end customers and grid operators—it also aligns with EEBUS Interop standards at the interface with end customers and implements European cybersecurity requirements.

“With the certification of our CLS Adapter Control System, the control system becomes not only digital but also smart,” said Karen Schmid, CLS Products Team Leader at PPC. “Our CLS solutions offer an open and interoperable platform that our partners and customers have been waiting for to address their numerous use cases. EMS providers, submetering service providers, control systems in accordance with Section 14a or Section 9 of the EEG—nothing stands in the way of rolling out digital value-added features. And the fact that we can announce this success here at E-World is the icing on the cake for us.”

Ingo Schönberg, CEO of PPC, puts this milestone into further context: “By consistently building a large partner network for the smart metering system and CLS applications, we are demonstrating that cooperation is of central importance in the rollout. Through our initiative ‘PPC connect: Interoperability in Action,’ we are promoting interoperability and use cases for the market. Our CLS platform is already being used by numerous partners in the heating, PV, and e-mobility sectors to implement their applications and services. In recent years, thanks to numerous successful interoperability tests, we have been able to gather shared experience and translate it into system solutions that have since proven their worth. The certification and interoperability with numerous partners are a great reward for years of hard work.”

In the next step, PPC will work with partners to certify additional application solutions for the CLS platform. As part of this process, new features will be integrated into the CLS adapters in the coming months through recertification. This includes the technician tool app, which customers have been eagerly awaiting, to further simplify the on-site commissioning of CLS devices. This means the next steps are already in place to further accelerate the control system rollout that is now getting underway.
