Mannheim / Dresden, May 27, 2025 – An important step toward the digital energy transition: Robotron and PPC have successfully tested the interoperability between the SMGWplus and the robotron*GWA-Manager based on the new control profiles. This was based on the standards for the data model at the SMGW’s WAN interface, DIN VDE V 0418-63-8. This ensures that control specifications are transmitted to the smart meter gateway in an interoperable and standardized manner.
That little bit extra beyond the standard
In this successfully tested solution, control signals are transmitted from the robotron*GWA Manager to the SMGWplus in accordance with DIN VDE V 0418-63-8. After transmission from the robotron*GWA Manager, the control signal is processed directly within the SMGWplus. It is then forwarded in EEBUS format to a controllable system or an energy management system. In accordance with the nationwide recommendations of the VDE FNN regarding the implementation of Section 14a of the Energy Economy Act (EnWG), EEBUS is the minimum requirement for the interface between the MSB’s control unit and the controllable customer system. The SMGWplus is a software product that can be retrofitted to all second-generation SMGWs via an update.
Control via the SMGWplus is integrated into the existing CLS/aEMT environments in a process-equivalent manner. This enables the parallel operation of control boxes, SMGWplus, CLS adapters, etc., within the Robotron IT systems.
This solution greatly simplifies installation and thereby significantly accelerates the control system rollout. The feature is currently implemented in the test PKI and available for pilot projects. Based on the “Power Limitation” functional package defined in protection profile PP-0073 V2.0 , the firmware will be certified shortly and made available for the production PKI starting in 2026.
The successful implementation of the functional chain also marks a highlight within the PPC connect initiative, which was launched in 2024. “The goal is to jointly develop new applications for the smart metering system,” said Ingo Schönberg, CEO of Power Plus Communications AG. “And we always do so with a clear focus on standardized interfaces within the energy transition ecosystem. Only true interoperability enables easy customer participation.” As a sign of their successful collaboration , PPC presented Robotron with its PPC connect Award at this year’s customer meeting, attended by over 250 participants.
The partners are looking forward to the next steps with confidence—further field tests and partner integrations are already in the works.
