This is what 1:n looks like in practice—co.met connects 21 customers in Saarbrücken via a smart meter gateway

A scalable rollout requires the ability to connect multiple meters via a smart meter gateway. It is crucial that data reception and transmission meet the same quality and security standards as in a point-to-point connection. The advantage of the new “1-to-n solutions” is that they operate wirelessly with over 50 meters, eliminating the need for complex RS485 cabling.

This practical solution is now being implemented in Saarbrücken. As the responsible metering point operator, co.met will both install the devices and serve as the smart meter gateway administrator. In collaboration with meter manufacturer eBZ and using PPC’s smart meter gateways, 30 state-of-the-art WD3 metering devices are now being installed in a 21-unit apartment building.

The OMS Compact Profile enables the connection of multiple meters via wireless M-Bus. The data that the meter transmits in the Compact Profile in accordance with OMS TR-07 is captured by the SMGW, and the SMGW can then calculate the TAF-7 value from this data. With this new solution, the meter readings from all meters are available as 15-minute intervals that comply with billing requirements. And thanks to the SMGW, all of this is done in a cyber-secure manner and in compliance with metrology regulations.

The official kickoff took place on August 17 with an on-site meeting in Saarbrücken and the handover of the hardware to co.met.
