Mannheim, January 22, 2025: 1,000 SMGWs Installed: Octopus Energy is Driving the Expansion of Smart Meters in Collaboration with PPC.
Octopus Energy, the climate-neutral energy provider from the United Kingdom, and PPC, the leading provider of smart meter gateways, have agreed to a strategic partnership for the German market. The goal: climate neutrality and customer benefits through the digital harnessing of decentralized flexibility via the rollout of intelligent metering systems (iMSys). The collaboration is already gaining momentum, as the energy provider has already announced the installation of its 1,000th PPC SMGW.
Octopus Energy focuses on providing its customers with a 100% sustainable and affordable energy supply through variable electricity rates and heat pump solutions, backed by high-quality service. To ensure sustainable integration into the energy market, Octopus Energy relies on PPC’s smart meter gateways. With 1/4-hour measurement data, the SMGWs enable transparent and flexible pricing of energy consumption as well as §14a-compliant communication for managing prosumers in the distribution grid. This allows Octopus Energy customers not only to save money but also to actively contribute to climate protection.
Bastian Gierull, CEO of Octopus Energy Germany, commented: “With the installation of our 1,000th smart meter gateway, we’re sending a clear message: The energy transition requires not only vision, but concrete progress. Together with PPC, we’re bringing state-of-the-art technology directly into our customers’ homes, enabling transparent rates, cost savings, and active climate protection. This is the future of energy supply—digital, sustainable, and consistently tailored to our customers’ needs.”
Based on many years of experience with over 1 million SMGWs shipped, PPC—as the market leader—brings a secure supply chain tailored to the needs of competitive metering point operators to the partnership. For Octopus customers, PPC’s Smart Meter Gateways 2.0 represent the most powerful product on the market. This ensures optimal preparation for the efficient implementation of control within the distribution network in accordance with Section 14a of the German Energy Economy Act (EnWG). Using PPC’s NMS will also make it possible to verify and reconcile the successful connection of even large numbers of SMGWs via the portal.
“We are very pleased about our partnership with Octopus, an innovative company with a clear vision for a climate-neutral energy supply that actively involves consumers. We are confident that together we will offer smart solutions to transform previously passive consumers into active participants in the energy transition,” says Ingo Schönberg, CEO of PPC.
The partnership between PPC and Octopus Energy is a prime example of successful collaboration between innovative companies in the smart energy sector. The partners are convinced that their solutions can make a significant contribution to the energy transition in Germany.
