TR-5 Adopted

A lengthy legal proceeding comes to the hoped-for conclusion

The BMWK has finalized BSI TR-03109-5. TR-5 ensures interoperability for users (end customers/operators) of the SMGW at the CLS interface with other components that control downstream heat pumps, wallboxes, or battery storage systems. It also describes security requirements for applications within the SMGW’s home area network (HAN) as part of the implementation of Section 14a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG).

It thus establishes guidelines for all parties involved through the standards it has created, enables users to get up to speed more quickly, and supports tradespeople during installation.

The document clearly outlines the interoperability and security requirements as well as implementation guidelines for Section 14a, energy management systems (EMS), and the Heating Costs Ordinance (HkVO). In the future, guaranteed interoperability will be ensured through the use of a communication adapter, thereby eliminating the need for special requirements for downstream devices. This allows the CLS landscape to remain flexible and pragmatic in product design for applications and customizations. This will allow further development in the CLS area to maintain a rapid pace in the future and to agilely incorporate lessons learned from real-world operation.

The requirements of BSI TR-03109-5 will take effect on January 1, 2024.

As PPC, we have, of course, long been working to standardize the implementation of requirements for our application partners, thereby making them simple and accessible.

Following last week’s decision on Section 14a and now TR-5, the final groundwork was laid just in time for the end of the year. Nothing now stands in the way of the cyber-secure digitalization of the energy transition in 2024, and all decision-makers who still saw reasons to hesitate can now move forward with confidence.
