PPC and Landis+Gyr Launch Collaboration on RLM Solutions via the Smart Metering System

Landis+Gyr and PPC are collaborating to drive the implementation of recording power measurement (RLM) via intelligent metering systems (iMSys) . This opens up new areas of application for iMSys, and RLM technology benefits from the certified, cyber-secure infrastructure.

Mannheim / Cham, October 10, 2022: The two leading providers of smart meter gateways and RLM solutions in Germany are collaborating on an interoperable, standardized RLM solution via intelligent metering systems (iMSys). Through their collaboration, Landis+Gyr and Power Plus Communications (PPC) aim to drive interoperable implementation and accelerate progress.

According to the Electricity Grid Access Ordinance, power consumption must be recorded using RLM meters for annual consumption of 100,000 kilowatt-hours or more. Until now, the meters have been read via remote communication without a uniform level of IT security. By utilizing the secure iMSys infrastructure, RLM is elevated to a new level of security. Data collected from RLM installations is not only highly relevant for billing purposes but also provides important information for grid-optimized operation.

Both companies see many benefits in this collaboration. Landis+Gyr’s metering technology is fully aligned with the industry standards set by the FNN and the DKE. In addition, PPC can draw on extensive experience in the development, use, and operation of iMSys. In the area of Wireless M-Bus connectivity, both companies are already driving the rollout forward by wirelessly connecting multiple meters to a smart meter gateway (“1:n”). This partnership is now being leveraged to develop corresponding solutions in the RLM segment as well.

Ingo Schönberg, CEO of PPC, commented on the collaboration: “We are pleased to be able to continue promoting standardization and interoperability in the RLM sector together with Landis+Gyr. As pioneers in our industry, we can work together to implement standards more quickly and drive new initiatives.” Olaf Abbing, Managing Director of Landis+Gyr Germany, adds: “Integrating the latest RLM technology into the smart meter gateway ecosystem is an important step in the digital transformation of the energy transition, and we want to play an active role in this process.”
