"Scilly Islands" Project
The Isles of Scilly are an archipelago southwest of Great Britain that is supplied with electricity from the mainland via a single 33-kV undersea power cable, supplemented only by local diesel generators. To prepare for and meet the challenges of reducing CO2 emissions and the increasing use of renewable energy, the British utility company Western Power Distribution (WPD) decided to test a smart grid on the Isles of Scilly. At the same time, WPD is supporting the island administration in its efforts to establish an independent energy supply based on renewable energy sources and storage.
