In the three-year innovation project “SMGW-forwards,” they are investing a total of just under 10 million euros in two real-world labs, where the expansion of the smart metering system and new applications will be driven forward. The focus is on further developing the smart meter gateway and the surrounding process landscape in accordance with the phased plan, as well as evaluating them in practice. The BMWK is providing 4.4 million euros in funding for the project, which is led by Power Plus Communications AG (PPC).

The Roadmap for the Digitalization of the Energy Transition issued by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK, formerly BMWi) outlines how the intelligent metering system (iMSys)—and thus also the smart meter gateway (SMGW) should be gradually developed for energy-related applications and smart buildings. As of today, iMSys is primarily used for energy industry use cases (EAF) in the areas of smart metering and smart grids. With an eye toward the upcoming Phase 4 of the roadmap, the iMSys is being further developed within the project and expanded to include additional features that are useful to users.

Figure 1: Energy Sector Use Cases

The project’s work focuses on ten EAFs, within the framework of which the grid-beneficial use of iMSys will be further enhanced beyond its current scope of functionality. In the Smart Grid area, use cases for both direct system control and control via setpoint specifications at the grid connection point are being further developed. The charging infrastructure also benefits from the solutions developed as part of EAF 7 and EAF 16. The iMSys systems, with their expanded functionality, can be used, among other things, to record energy consumption during the charging process. In addition, the range of iMSys applications in the traditional “Smart and Sub-Metering” domain will be further expanded, with a focus on data collection from properties, the provision of information for value-added services, and the area of “registered power measurement (RLM).”

The project began earlier this year with the design of the EAFs covered by the project. As part of this process, the system and communication architectures for the interaction between the individual roles and components of the EAFs were developed, and process chains were established. From this, the most important development needs for each project partner were identified.

To achieve the project goals, Power Plus Communications AG (PPC) will continue to develop its smart meter gateways and CLS devices. Robotron Datenbank-Software GmbH plans to upgrade its GWA and EMT systems to meet future challenges. The enhanced iMSys will then be tested by the project partners—e.kundenservice Netz GmbH, TEAG Thüringer Energie AG, and TMZ Thüringer Mess- und Zählerwesen Service GmbH—in real-world labs at customer sites. In addition, the project partners regularly exchange information with the BMWK, the BSI (Federal Office for Information Security), and other authorities regarding project progress and valuable insights from the project findings for standardization purposes.

Figure 2: Project Partners and Responsibilities in the Project

The goal is to bring the functionalities developed in the project to market readiness and optimize them for use in the mass market.
