A budget of over 60 million euros is available for conducting field trials in the urban areas of Munich and Düsseldorf, as well as rural field trials in Eastern Bavaria, Lower Saxony, and Northern Hesse.

Charging Solutions for Satisfied Customers

For automakers, customer-oriented charging concepts—such as bidirectional and smart charging—are a top priority. A key focus is on further developing the ISO 15118 standard to meet the demands for mobility and convenience. The goal is to ensure the integration of electric mobility—both at home and in public and systemic contexts. To this end, necessary components are being further developed and use cases are being tested. The insights gained regarding technical implementation and customer experiences will influence the product design of the project partners.

Adaptation of the Existing Infrastructure

Grid operators and energy suppliers are focusing on the smart integration of electric mobility and other flexibility options into the energy system. To this end, the existing infrastructure is to be supplemented with hardware and software components. Communication between electric vehicles and the power grid will take place via smart meter gateways. In addition, new mechanisms and control processes are being developed and tested. The IT processes and components are being developed and implemented by participating companies to enable interoperable communication between stakeholders and components. A key aspect here is the development of intelligent charging and energy management algorithms.

The entire context is taken into account

The role of science in unIT-e² is to develop methods for the preparation, monitoring, and synthesis of field trials. Furthermore, the tested use cases are modeled to determine systemic, environmental, and economic impacts. Based on this data, models and algorithms can then be further developed, enabling realistic conclusions to be drawn in the future. The scientific partners in the consortium are also responsible for addressing legal and regulatory issues, investigating user behavior, and analyzing decision-making processes from the perspective of the stakeholders.

The FfE in Munich is leading the consortium and thus managing the project. “We are very pleased that the FfE has the opportunity to serve as a transformation partner and liaison between the various industries in unIT-e²,” said Dr.-Ing. Christoph Pellinger, Managing Director of the FfE.

4 clusters for the demonstration—2 conceptual subprojects for the network and research

At the heart of the project are four Germany-wide field trials—known as “clusters”—in which partners develop use cases and demonstrate them in practice. Each cluster includes an automaker as well as partners from the energy sector and the IT industry. As part of a subproject, partners from the energy sector are developing solutions for integrating electric vehicles into the energy system. Universities and research institutes are providing scientific support for the project.

Harmon-E Cluster

The Harmon-E cluster is developing and demonstrating the entire process, from the energy market to the flexible charging and discharging of electric vehicles. To achieve this goal, the following partners have joined forces: EWE Go GmbH, EWE Netz GmbH, FfE, Fraunhofer SIT, Kostal Industrie Elektrik GmbH, Mercedes-Benz AG, Power Plus Communications AG, The Mobility House GmbH, the University of Passau, and Viessmann Climate Solutions SE. The goal: harmonious interaction of the entire system, consisting of a virtual power plant, vehicles, charging infrastructure, iMSys, and a home energy management system or fleet management system. The focus is on the process chain for the energy-market-oriented and CO2-optimized charging and discharging of electric vehicles while taking grid restrictions into account. To achieve conflict-free and scalable control of electric vehicles, various implementation options—regardless of technology—are being investigated, prioritized, and tested for customer suitability through laboratory and field trials. Within the Harmon-E cluster, a pilot implementation of ISO 15118-20 is being carried out to investigate bidirectional charging use cases. Compliance with the highest IT security requirements for bidirectional charging also ensures a resilient overall system.

Heav-E Cluster

The Heav-E cluster is conducting a large-scale field test in the North Hesse region to investigate the impact on the grid of high penetration of private and commercial electric vehicles and their charging processes. The project partners involved are EAM Netz GmbH, FfE, Flavia IT-Management GmbH, Power Plus Communications AG, Regionalmanagement Nordhessen GmbH, RWTH Aachen University, the University of Kassel, and Volkswagen AG. The focus is on aligning and exchanging perspectives and objectives between the energy and automotive sectors to achieve a holistically optimized integration of the mobility and energy transitions. Within this framework, various incentive systems and their impact on the charging behavior of electric vehicle users and the resulting utilization of the distribution grid infrastructure will be examined. Furthermore, various energy sector data (smart meter gateways, station measurements, etc.) and vehicle and charging infrastructure data will be consolidated. The goal is to ensure secure control of the charging infrastructure based on appropriate protocols (e.g., Open Charge Point Protocol and EEBUS), while taking into account the amendment to Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG).

Cit-E-Life Cluster

The Cit-E-Life urban cluster has two locations: Munich and Düsseldorf.
