07\/07\/2023 With the second generation of its proven Smart Meter Gateway, PPC strengthens its portfolio for the agile rollout path outlined in the GNDEW and leverages the opportunities arising from the implementation of Section 14a of the EnWG.<\/strong><\/p>

Why SMGW 2.0?<\/strong><\/p>

“Newer, higher, further” could, of course, be the rallying cry, as in many product development cycles. However, for the development of our second generation Smart Meter Gateways, other factors are also crucial drivers. <\/p>

More Power for New Use Cases<\/strong><\/p>

For the successful implementation of the energy, transport, and heating transition, the Smart Meter Gateway is the essential, cyber-secure digitalization component and platform for interaction with end customers. In the coming years, numerous new use cases will be implemented in the ecosystem of intelligent metering systems. The SMGW 2.0, with its high-performance hardware basis, provides the ideal prerequisite for leveraging opportunities and added value, and for realizing new applications, including in the area of controllable loads according to Section 14a of the EnWG, and new services. The current amendment to the Measurement and Calibration Act and the Measurement and Calibration Ordinance underscore the relevance of powerful and long-term usable hardware as a platform for new use cases: Due to the unlimited calibration period, it is already worthwhile today to set the course for the applications of tomorrow and beyond. MSBs (Metering Point Operators) will immediately benefit from the increased performance in the rollout, which saves several minutes of working time per installation and provides the basis for connecting even more meters (1:n) interoperably and across sectors to an SMGW. <\/p>

New Components, Better Availability<\/strong><\/p>

Tensions in global supply chains were an omnipresent challenge, especially in 2022, and were also present in the procurement of components for SMGW manufacturing. With the targeted use of the latest and widely available components, PPC is optimally positioned with the second gateway generation, as the new components are not only more powerful but also significantly more available on the global market. Furthermore, PPC has already planned a second source for over 95% of all components in the SMGW 2.0 to counteract potential bottleneck situations with a single supplier. <\/p>

Stable Prices in Turbulent Times<\/strong><\/p>

With pressure on the supply chain, prices also become more unstable, and unclear forecasts complicate long-term planning, which is of great importance for a successful SMGW rollout. With the layout of the second SMGW generation, greater independence is also introduced here. This stabilizes the pricing and planning policy for us and our partners. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

New Platform, Proven Software<\/strong><\/p>

As a highly secure communication gateway, the SMGW consists not only of chips and hardware but also of mature, certified firmware hardened through hundreds of thousands of field deployments. The proven firmware of the SMGW 2.0 offers all functions available on SMGW 1 right from the start. <\/p>

The development of the SMGW 2.0 firmware will not be separate in the future, but rather together with the SMGW 1 firmware. Proven functions will thus be immediately available on both generations, and at the same time, an extended range of functions can be realized on the high-performance SMGW 2.0 hardware basis in the future. <\/p>

Software updates can be rolled out remotely by the GWA as usual and are expected to be rolled out without a separate approval process at the state level due to the amendment of calibration law.<\/p>

Continuity – The SMGW1 Generation Is Not Obsolete Yet<\/strong><\/p>

The two gateway generations thus also reflect the market dynamics in the rapidly accelerating rollout.
