The BundesDisplay working group has developed \u201cTRuDI,\u201d a software solution for smart metering systems in private households. This transparency and display software provides end users with a standardized, cross-manufacturer view of their energy consumption and enables them to review their bills.<\/p>

A smart meter gateway (SMGW) is the interface between the digital electricity meter in your home or your own energy generation system (if you have one) and the public power grid.<\/p>

Devices connected to the smart meter gateway can send and receive data securely and without interference. All communication is encrypted.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A smart metering system consists of a smart meter (digital metering device) combined with a smart meter gateway (communication unit) and replaces analog Ferraris electricity meters. Together, these two devices can measure the current meter reading as well as electricity consumption at the actual time of use (e.g., per day, week, month, or year).<\/p>

The increasingly decentralized feed-in of renewable energy\u2014such as from residential solar systems\u2014poses a major challenge for energy supply systems. On the one hand, energy from renewable sources is fed into the grid at unpredictable times; on the other hand, energy consumption at certain times of the day can create significant peak loads. As part of the rollout of smart grids, smart metering systems are being implemented in accordance with the \u201cAct on Metering Point Operation and Data Communication in Smart Grids\u201d (MsbG, see https:\/\/www.gesetze-im-internet.de\/messbg\/<\/a>).<\/p>

The smart metering system will be a central component. Data protection is particularly important in this context. The energy supply and your data must be secure. The legislature therefore mandates high security requirements, which the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI)<\/span><\/a> monitors.<\/p>

To this end, the Bundestag passed the Act on the Digitalization of the Energy Transition (GDEW) (PDF, 264 KB)<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> This law aims to establish a modern infrastructure for the energy transition. This affects everyone, as a new technology is being rolled out.<\/p>

By using these legally mandated metering systems, which are integrated into a communications network, you as a consumer will gain greater transparency into your own energy consumption and the ability to analyze your consumption patterns in order to reduce your energy costs based on your current usage.
